The Best Scary Movies of All Time

Watching your first scary movie is a big step in any kids life, but as you grow older and your scary movie repertoire grows, you realize not all scary movies are equal. There’s old scary movies with bad effect but great plotlines. There’s the classic jump-scare-demon-devil-ghost movies. There are thrillers that leave you on the edge of your seat with anticipation.

Whatever your taste may be, we’ve compiled some of the best scary movies for your enjoyment this Halloween season.

Black Swan

Undoubtedly one of Natalie Portman’s best performances, winning an Oscar for best performance by an actress in a leading role, Black Swan is a total mindfuck. Essentially, you watch as a dancer trains for the elite lead in Swan Lake while simultaneously losing her sanity.

This movie was hyped up quite a bit recently, but in my opinion, it deserves it. Rather than making you scream, this movie will make you deeply uncomfortable in the best way. I couldn’t rip my eyes away from the screen as I watched the family break apart.

Get Out

This movie’s twist will gives you goosebumps that last for hours. It’s also more than just a horror movie: it explores some deeper topics such as race relations in America. Don’t get it twisted though, it’s still absolute horror.

Sixth Sense

This one embodies the idea of classic horror. One of the most famous plot twists of all time, and certainly the most intense on this list, the movie starts a little slow but will leave you wanting to watch it all over again immediately after. It’s old, but timeless.

This movie is exactly what it’s title infers: a sinister dark story that isn’t only disgusting, but also deeply terrifying. This one builds up great suspense and is the kind of scary that hits everyone. If you’re looking for a movie you know will scare all your friends: this one is it.

Primal Fear

Yet another great plot twist, this movie definitely falls under suspense thriller and less under horror. If you’re looking to scream out of your seat, refer to the rest of the list, but if you want to really enjoy a movie with great acting and story points, this is one of the best courtroom dramas ever.

Silence of the Lambs

Rated as one of the best and most influential movies of all time, this one is everything you think it’s going to be and more. Winner of five Oscars, Silence of the Lambs is about the FBI trying to use one serial killer to find another, and it’s every bit as thrilling as a literal rollercoaster.

The Shining

An absolute classic thriller with some of the most iconic lines and characters of all time. From “Here’s Johnny!” to the creepy recitation of “REDRUM”, The Shining is a horrifyingly intense story about a family’s struggle with isolation.

If you love gore and exploring just how terrible humans can be, this movie is perfect. There are so many movies in this series your scary movie thirst will be quenched for the entire month of October. This movie is fucked-up in every sense and not all for the faint of heart nor stomach.

The Blair Witch Project

This is my personal favorite on the list. I genuinely didn’t know if it was real or fake and I felt like I was going to puke, scream, cry, and faint throughout the entire movie. If you get nauseous easily, this might be a tough watch because it’s all filmed home movie style, but if you really want to be scared, this is a must watch.

Classic murderer movie, Hush is about a deaf woman that faces an awful killer. It is intense, although a bit predictable. I’d recommend this one if you’re new to scary movies.

This is usually looked over in the scary movie category, but what music does everyone mock in intense situations? That’s right baby, the Jaws song. This is definitely quite an old movie, but the idea of a giant killer shark still crosses the minds of everyone that swims in the ocean, making this movie worth the watch.

This is one of those movies that’ll have you gripping on to your watching partner. You’ll definitely get some screams and jumps in while also following a solid plot. Insidious follows a boy who falls in to a coma and his family’s quest to release him from the evil spirits.

Children of the Corn

If you were naughty like I was as a kid, you probably heard that you were a child of the corn. This one’s a little confusing, but in a way that’ll make you want to watch more. This is also a super long series, but I’d say at least a couple are pretty great Halloween movies.

The Exorcist

Film critics and horror lovers alike have praised this movie as one of the best and scariest of all time. I think it’s perfect for anyone, whether you’ve never seen a scary movie or have seen every single one on this list. I won’t say too much, aside from that this one is really great.

I hope you find the time this month or any month to watch a few scary movies. There are some great ones here, but also an infinity of others. If you find one you think deserves to be on this list, let us know and we’ll give it a watch!
